You’re probably aware that nail biting leads to torn, uneven nails, but did you know what it can do to your oral health? Biting your nails can crack, chip and put extra wear on your front teeth. For kids and adults who wear braces it can put you at greater risk for root resorptionĀ or tooth loss. Studies show that children who chew on pencils or nails will be at a greater risk for clenching, which can cause painful jaws, headaches, tooth sensitivity, popping of your jaws and recessed gums. Other risks, are torn or damaged gums and the spread of bacteria from your mouth to the nail bed or bloodstream.
